چکیده

Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) are popular flame-retardants which are highly hydrophobic and ubiquitous in the environment. Elevated concentrations of PBDEs have been found in biosolids and in agricultural soils that have received biosolids in Europe and North America over the last 5 years. A study was carried out to confirm the contamination of soil by PBDEs due to biosolids application, and to investigate the PBDE mobility in the soil in a B.C. farm that had applied 20 and 80 T/ha biosolids on the soil. A twenty fold increase of PBDE concentration was measured from 20 to 80 T/ha, confirming that biosolids application are a source of PBDE contamination to agricultural soils. In addition, PBDEs were found to be mobile, migrating downwards to depths in excess of 1 metre.

Triclocarban, triclosan, polybrominated diphenyl ethers, and 4-nonylphenol in biosolids and in soil receiving 33-year biosolids application.

Land application of biosolids is a common practice throughout the world. However, concerns continue to be raised about the safety of this practice, because biosolids may contain trace levels of organic contaminants. The present study evaluated the levels of triclocarban (TCC), triclosan (TCS), 4-nonylphenol (4-NP), and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) in biosolids from 16 wastewater treat...

Persistence of polybrominated diphenyl ethers in agricultural soils after biosolids applications.

This study examines polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDE) levels, trends in biosolids from a wastewater treatment plant, and evaluates potential factors governing PBDE concentrations and the fate in agricultural soils fertilized by biosolids. The mean concentration of the most abundant PBDE congeners in biosolids ( summation operatorBDE-47, BDE-99, and BDE-209) generated by one wastewater treat...

Effect of sewage sludges contaminated with polybrominated diphenylethers on agricultural soils.

The fate of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) in sewage sludge after agricultural application was analysed. This study was based on the analysis of sewage sludge and sludge amended soil samples collected during 2005. PBDE concentrations in sewage sludge ranged from 197 to 1185ng/g dry weight (dw), being deca-BDE-209 the predominant congener. PBDE levels in soils ranged between 21 and 690ng...

Review of 'emerging' organic contaminants in biosolids and assessment of international research priorities for the agricultural use of biosolids.

A broad spectrum of organic chemicals is essential to modern society. Once discharged from industrial, domestic and urban sources into the urban wastewater collection system they may transfer to the residual solids during wastewater treatment and assessment of their significance and implications for beneficial recycling of the treated sewage sludge biosolids is required. Research on organic con...
